  • to the best law professor i've ever had - rest in peace.

Dear Alumni and Friends of the USC Gould School of Law,

It is with tremendous sadness and sense of loss that I have to report the passing of my friend and colleague, Charlie Whitebread. Charlie died yesterday from cancer. He had been a law professor for more than 40 years, teaching his last students this past spring.

Many of you know how tragic this loss is to our law school community. For those who did not have the good fortune to have Charlie as a teacher or as a friend, he exemplified those attributes that our law school holds dear. He was a phenomenal classroom teacher, an engaged scholar, and a tireless advocate for our students and for justice. I have attached a bio which describes some of Charlie's accomplishments, though no words can adequately convey the life force that was Charlie Whitebread.

Many have already asked about our plans to recognize Charlie's contributions to USC. We are currently setting a date for a celebration of Charlie's life, and we will inform you once we have the date, time and venue set. Some of Charlie’s closest friends approached me asking if they could do something to honor Charlie’s memory. They decided to set up a Charles H. Whitebread scholarship fund at USC Law because they knew how much Charlie cared about our students.

    With much sadness,

    Bob

  • It'll be fine
    Nothing to fear
    He'll be as happy
    as he was here
    Things have worked out
    much better than planned
    It makes you smile
    When Fate takes a hand
    And I know I'll forget
How much he meant to me
And how he was almost my baby
    Maybe

so remember when rooster and lily went to claim Annie?  that's exactly how i feel now.  i met simon at the humane society this morning.  i knew another asian couple had their eye on him so i quickly got his tag number and requested a meeting session with him.  it turns out that while we were getting acquainted, i.e., bonding/falling in love/choosing his name/planning the next 10 years or so, with him, the other couple went and put a HOLD on him at the counter.  how unfair is that?  *sob.

and how you were almost my baby.....maybe.

    have a good life, simon.

  • I Got Tagged - 8 Random Facts

    Eight Random Facts About demi_kasia

I was tagged by akindofblue (prepare yourselves, you might just be next...)

    The rules:
    1. Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
    2. People who are tagged need to write a post on their own blog (about their eight things) and post these rules.
    3. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.

    1. Unless I am sleeping in very close proximity to another person or very intoxicated, I have to sleep with the lights on.  Not just a nightlight, but the bedlamp.  In college, my dad used to get mad when I came back for the weekend and would sleep with the lights on, so I'd grab a sleeping bag and camp out on my younger brother's bedroom floor.  This is a product of the OUIJA board working when I played it years ago.

    2. I have to wear socks indoors.  When I forget to bring socks and end up at a friend's home and have to take off my shoes, I feel extremely uncomfortable and want to leave.  I tried weird things like sticking my feet underneath rugs without anyone noticing, but that never worked.  Covering my feet with a jacket never worked either.  Borrowing socks was the only answer, but that only happened if I felt close enough to the host.

    3. I really wanted a Honda Civic, silver, when I was 16.  I think I mentioned it only in passing and, for Christmas that year, my dad showed up at home with a brand new silver Honda Civic.  I felt pretty damn spoiled.

    4. I love Journey From the Fall - just released last week!  I so admire the director and producer, the cast and crew.  It was impossible to tell from watching the movie that it was a low-budget film.  And the passion held by everyone involved really added to the final product.  I don't have the talent, but I'd really like to see a movie like this made about the Nanking Massacre.

    5. In fifth grade, I lied and told my piano teacher that my middle name was Nicole (my middle name is actually my Chinese name.)  Afterwards, she started writing Kasie N. Lee on all of my certificates.  That made it official, so after that, whenever I felt like it, I told everyone that my middle name was Nicole.

    6. I sing in the car.

    7. I read my 8th grade English class journal and discovered that, at age 11, I was pro-war, pro-troops, anti-anti-war-protestors, and anti-Saddam Hussein.  Then again, I was also VP of the Rush Limbaugh club or something like that.

    8. I really like eating simple Chinese dishes - like stir-fried bok choy, salted pork - stuff like that.  I sometimes prefer that stuff with a bowl of rice over steak or sashimi or other more fancier foods.
